Research Interests and Consulting Topics
- Schwefel-Chemie - Sulfur Chemistry (Inorganic and Organic) :
- Molecular structures, transition states, reaction mechanisms and thermodynamic properties by ab-initio MO calculations (computational chemistry)
- Elemental sulfur: synthesis of new allotropes, their spectroscopic and structural characterization, physical properties important for industrial processes
- Synthesis and structure of sulfur-rich compounds with organic and inorganic substituents
- Oxides and oxoacids of sulfur (experimental and theoretical study of the structures and physical properties such as acidities)
- Hydrogen sulfide, higher sulfanes and polysulfide anions (theoretical study of their structures, reactions and physical properties such as acidities; reactions in sodium/sulfur and lithium/sulfur batteries)
- Halides and oxohalides of sulfur (experimental and theoretical study of the structures and physical properties)
- Sulfurization processes including rubber vulcanization (elucidation of reaction mechanisms, role of zinc oxide in rubber vulcanization, study of side reactions)
- Dry and wet desulfurization processes (e.g., Claus Process and Stretford Process)
- Transition metal complexes with sulfur-donor ligands (synthesis of novel complexes for the application as ligand transfer reagents)
- Metabolism of sulfur bacteria (redox reactions occurring in natural habitats populated by sulfur bacteria as part of the global sulfur cycle)
- Analytical techniques for sulfur compounds (Raman spectroscopy, HPLC and ion-pair chromatography)
- Link to Literature on elemental sulfur and sulfur compounds
- Selenium chemistry (Elemental selenium and selenium-rich compounds, their characterization by 77Se NMR spectroscopy)
- Zinc chemistry (Zinc oxide clusters: Structures, thermodynamics and reactions; coordination compounds of zinc, especially those related to rubber vulcanization chemistry)
